The Tandem language learning method involves two speakers of different native
languages collaborating to improve their knowledge of the other's language and
culture. Virginia Tech students are invited to participate in a Tandem Program
to strengthen language skills and build relationships between international and
domestic students.
Languages offered in the Tandem Program are limited to language classes
offered by Virginia Tech; which include Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Greek,
Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish. Participants are encouraged
to speak both languages when meeting with their partner, if it be 30 minute
segments for each language, or switching between languages spoken upon
every meeting session. All language levels are welcome to apply for a Tandem
partner but an intermediate level of the partner language is encouraged to
facilitate understanding and conversational ability.
Through Tandem, American and International students alike will have the chance
to learn other languages and other cultures. Thanks to the Tandem Program,
Virginia Tech students have a resource to get in contact with local native
speakers to practice their language skills and learn more about other cultures in
a relaxed environment. The students who are interested in joining the program need
to fill out the survey in the link below and they will receive an e-mail with their partners
name and email and should get in contact with them to start the Tandem Language
